Natural Mouth Care

0

Eliminating commercial, often chemical filled, oral hygiene products from our home is one transition many people have a hard time with. Sometimes, even when a switch is made, the commitment doesn’t remain, so one may go back to the products they are used to.

A selection of natural products to help maintain oral hygiene without the use of nasty chemicals for which we aren't sure of their long term effects. These are all natural products you can feel safe about using in your mouth, and your child's mouth.

This post isn’t meant to make any claims on what works and what doesn’t work. I am not writing this to express my own opinions on the chemicals in mouth care products that fill the shelves of so many stores, or why I feel these natural products are a better, even healthier, option. I have put this post together with the intention of listing some of my favorite oral care products, to help those who have made the decision on their own, to go natural, find products they may enjoy using in their own home. I have tried every single one of these items myself.

Xylitol and Neem Bark Tooth Soap

I really liked using this tooth soap from Rose of Sharon Acres on ETSY. The orange cinnamon flavor is quite nice, and no doubt your teeth are left with a squeaky clean feeling when you are done. You’re supposed to chomp on a small piece in the back of your teeth to mash it and then begin brushing with just a wet toothbrush. What I love is the foaming action, which gives me that same cleaning sensation as a conventional foaming toothpaste. What can be hard for some is the soap taste you will inevitably experience. What I was unsure of, was whether there was enough beneficial ingredients for our teeth. That’s why I ended up making my own toothpaste.

You can find my recipe here for homemade toothpaste.

An easy homemade mineral toothpaste for a naurally healthy mouth. No harsh chemicals or abrasives. These natural ingredients are easy to locate and safe for the kids to use.

I did some research on the best ingredients to include into my mineral clay based toothpaste, which my family has been using for about 2 years now. I’m not sure I believe the claims out there that state after months of using a similar recipe, they saw their cavities “disappearing”, but I do feel pretty good about the ingredients I add to my own recipe. That being said, we make it a point to use baking soda once a week to really scrub our teeth clean.

I’m also a fan of Earth Paste for when we are on the go, or when the kids sleep over at their Grandma’s. The flavors are all pretty amazing. The reason I choose to travel with this, is that sometimes my own clay recipe can end up thick. Earth Paste ensures easy rinsability in whichever foreign sink I may have to use while we are away from home.

Desert Essence Tea Tree Oil Mouthwash

This is a nice antiseptic mouthwash with all natural ingredients.

Then there is the ecological bamboo toothbrushes which I absolutely love! Find them here.

Even if you don’t use these products, keep up the search and the hard work to convert to all things natural and eco-friendly. You can do it!
